Born: 3 June 1969.

Education: Graduated from the Law School of the University of Iceland in 1998. Was admitted to the bar as a District Court Attorney in 1999.

Career: Hordur Helgi worked as a lawyer and an attorney for the boutique firm Dombaer ehf. from 1997. He was recruited as general counsel to the Icelandic Data Protection Authority at its inception in 2000, and became its Chief Legal Counsel and Deputy Commissioner in 2001. Legal advisor for The Legal Farm, VT, USA 2002-2006. Hordur Helgi joined LM Attorneys (now Landslog) in 2006. He served as Iceland’s Data Protection Commissioner 2013-2014, and was in 2017 elected by Parliament to serve on the National Court (Landsdómur). Hordur Helgi leads the ICT team at Landslög, focusing on GDPR compliance and software license agreements.

Other activities: Member of the board of the University of Iceland’s Legal Institute 1995-1997. A founding member of the Lions Club ‘Askur’ in Reykjavik 1998. He received his certification in 2001 as Certified Lead Auditor – BS 7799 (now: ISO/IEC 27001) from the British Standards Institute. Member of the board of the Icelandic Section of Amnesty International 2007-2018, serving as Vice-Chairman 2008-2012 and Chair of the Section 2012-2018. Hordur Helgi was elected by parliament in 2017 to serve on the National Court (Landsdómur). He is a member of the ISO/PC 317, CEN/CLC/JTC 8 and 13 technical committees from 2018, and holds a security clearance from the National Commissioner of the Icelandic Police.

Teaching and research: Hordur Helgi has lectured at the Law Faculty of the University of Iceland, the University of Akureyri, the University of Reykjavik, Tartu University, and University of Oxford, on privacy law, cryptography, and information security. His works have also been published in peer-reviewed journals and textbooks.
